Lower Eyelid Muscle Tuck

Bleph93FrontalBeforeThis is a great example of what can be accomplished with a lower eyelid muscle tuck procedure. This young lady was unhappy with the excess fullness running along the lower eyelid region. Unlike most lower eyelid patients, who typically have excess fatty deposits that produce unwanted ‘bags’ under the eyes, this patient had a different problem. Her main issue was the underlying muscle (called the orbicularis oculi muscle) was considered hypertrophic, or too thick.

Bleph93FrontalDiagramI ended up performing a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, or lower eyelid cosmetic tuck procedure, to help improve her looks. This involved doing a surgical procedure that includes making an incision along a natural crease that runs underneath the lashes of the lower eyelid. This is represented by the red line shown in the adjacent photo diagram. The surgery also involved lifting up the lower eyelid skin to expose the underlying muscle. The muscle was then hemmed, or tightened upward. The excess lower eyelid skin was then conservatively trimmed to further tighten up the lower eyelid.

Here is a before and after photo comparison following the lower eyelid blepharoplasty procedure. As you can easily see – she has a nice cosmetic improvement in terms of the lower eyelid region. More specifically, the excess ridge or fullness that was once present is now gone. She has a much smoother looking lower eyelid contour that provides here with a much more rested, youthful appearance. And all of this was done with minimal visible scarring noted.
