Injectable fillers for lower eyelid hollowing continue to be a very popular med spa treatment for our San Diego patients. And within this group, younger patients are a growing segment seeking out a non-surgical option to rejuvenate their prematurely, tired looking lower eyelids. Here is a classic example of this type of injectable filler treatment in a younger female who presented with unwanted hollowing of her lower eyelids.
As you can see, she is much too young to attribute this hollowing to the aging process. Like so many younger patients around her age, this is a congenital predisposition to losing fullness, which is just more pronounced in her lower eyelid-cheek junction. Patients like her often times note they see abnormal shadowing or darkness across the lower eyelid. This is because the soft tissue in this area has thinned out and left her with hollowing. It is this loss of lower eyelid volume that then shadows when light hits the face from various angles. The clinical manifestation of this is looking tired and prematurely aged around the eyes.
Eyelid Injectable Fillers
So what is the best option for lower eyelid shadows and darkness from hollowing? Well, there are a number of options, fortunately. But in terms of non-surgical treatments that can be done in our med spa setting, injectable fillers are far and away the most popular choice. That is because the lower eyelids can be rejuvenated in the office with essentially no downtime or recovery. In 2019, the most frequently requested injectable fillers are Restylane and Juvederm Vollure when it comes to treating the lower eyelid hollows. Restylane classic and Restylane Refyne are probably the most common ones we use to treat the dark shadows. But Juvederm Vollure has come on in the last few years as an increasingly popular selection by many patients and med spas. Both injectable fillers are very predictable and safe to use when rejuvenating the lower eyelids. In some cases, it really boils down to whether or not a patient has loyalty towards Galderma (the distributor of Restylane products) versus Allergan (distributor of Juvederm products). As we like to say, it really comes down to choosing between Coke or Pepsi – they are quite similar to one another and both injectable fillers will do the job.
Eyelid Filler Rejuvenation
And here is a typical result from injectable filler placement along the lower eyelid to help target unwanted darkness and shadows. In this case, Restylane was chosen to fill the hollows along each side. Just a small amount – about 1 syringe of Restylane – was used to augment the lower eyelid areas that were lacking in volume. As you can easily appreciate, the shadowing and hollows were filled in very nicely to give her a beautiful, natural-looking cosmetic improvement. She now appears more rested and rejuvenated, yet still looks like herself. And there was no bruising! These photos were taken minutes after her Restylane injection and shows how so many patients can have their lower eyelids treated with essentially no downtime.
